I have hand-picked each and every thing around me to create a space that is intentional, heartening and wholesome.

This photo series in collaboration with Rebecca (@yebeccayoo) is inspired by the rich hue of terra cotta and earthy atmospheres.

I wanted these images to reflect the importance of being intentional with our surroundings. The things and memories we hold onto makeup our life. Going back through these images almost a year after during the recent focus on “tidying up”, it’s comforting to know that this idea did not lack validity. In case you’re new to this term or aren’t familiar to Marie Kondu, here’s a little recap:

Kondu is a Japanese organizing consultant and author who is pretty much an expert in creating intentional homes. She has a method that involves gathering together all of one’s belongings, one category at a time, and then keeping only those things that “spark joy” and choosing a place for everything from then on.

It’s something that takes time. In western culture, it almost seems like we start collecting things from the moment we are born. So by the time we are adults, our homes are filled with childhood memorabilia, old school papers, and a plethora of other things. Now, I’m not saying that all these things are bad, it just presents the question, what’s really worth keeping? In Japanese, the term “spark joy” translates to tokimeku (ときめく ) meaning “flutter, throb, or palpitate”.

I can name very few things in my home that make my heart flutter: family photographs, surviving houseplants, and a couple of knick-knacks associated with good memories are a few to name. This would mean that there are a lot of things that I continue to hold on to that don’t serve a purpose in my life. They aren’t important documents or treasured items… it’s just stuff, and some of that stuff makes me feel weighed down. You know, the things that we keep out of obligation or that are associated with a sad memory.

When I started applying this concept to my life, I found that the hardest things to give up were the ones I felt indifferent about. “I don’t need it now, but maybe I’ll want it in the future.” At first, it seemed like a harmless feeling, but once the indifferent pile grew bigger and bigger, I realized that I have a lot of expectations for myself in the future. I’m going to reread that college book that I was interested in Junior or finally finish that craft. Just thinking about all the “should’s” or “will do’s” makes me feel suffocated just thinking about. So, let’s make room to breathe. And with that I leave you with these considerations:

What am I choosing to have influence over my life?

And is it enabling room to grow or leaving me suffocated?

The space in which we live should be for the person we are becoming now, not for the person we were in the past.

Trends vs. Inspiration

[vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][image_with_animation image_url=”7123″ alignment=”center” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%” margin_bottom=”.5″][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1551835748776{margin-right: 20px !important;margin-left: 20px !important;padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”]

Ditch the twinkly lights and faux nerd glasses.  If you spend any amount of time online, you’ve probably noticed some trends like a girl engulfed in twinkly lights or staring down intensely at her coffee. Depending on your purpose behind the photograph, sometimes it’s hard to avoid these trends because let’s be honest… when it comes to stock photos, a girl and her cup of joe = sales.

It’s when we have the creative freedom that jumping on the trendy train gets messy. I once read that “they (trends) can inspire complacency and swallow visual identity. When a trend fails, you’re left with photographs anyone could have shot.” I think most creatives can agree that the reason behind getting into this niche was not to get swallowed up in a popular fad. The real reason behind following trends is to gain public approval—I get it, I want my work to be liked just as much as the next person, but at the end of the day, my appreciation for my work is more important than gaining the public’s favor. So, here are 3 tips that have helped me avoid following trends in my photography:

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

1. Find sources of inspiration other than people.

For the longest time, most of my inspiration came from my favorite photographers. After a while, I noticed a shift in my style because I liked so-and-so’s photography more than my own. If I am always following other people’s trends then I am neglecting my own creativity. Some other sources of inspiration can be experiences, pieces of clothing or props, locations, emotions, or color schemes.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

2. Take time out of your day to brainstorm ideas.

Put down your phone and stop relying on Pinterest. Creativity is a muscle that has to be exercised. Take a good 15-20 minutes to organize your thoughts on paper. This could be through creative writing, jotting down a shot list, or my personal favorite, very message doodles. I feel like I should emphasize the fact that when I draw compositions on paper, nobody would know what it was but me. The point: don’t let drawing keep you in the way of brainstorming ideas.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

3. Figure out why a trend appeals to you and make it your own.

Following a trend isn’t bad, but it’s easy to be a copycat of another person’s style. Figure out why you like a trend. Maybe you’re drawn to the twinkly lights because it feels surreal or you enjoy playing around with different light sources. Take a piece of the trend and flip it on its backside to make it your own. For example, instead of tangling your subject in the lights, put them behind a bedsheet to create a luminous backdrop.

All in all — if I had to sum up these tips in a sentence, it’d be: don’t be afraid to jump on a bandwagon, just don’t be the one who looks to everyone else for how to ride it.

Portrait of a Stranger

[vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1552166667376{margin-right: 0px !important;margin-left: 0px !important;padding-top: 10px !important;padding-bottom: 10px !important;}”]

There’s been plenty of times I have pep-talked myself into mustering up the courage to ask a stranger if I can take their portrait – and 9/10, I let the opportunity slip through my grasps.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

I can’t explain why I lack the courage – if it were any other situation, I surely would go up and introduce myself, but when it comes to photography, I somehow lack the boldness.

On this particular day, this girl grabbed me by my arm, insisting I take her photo. She dragged me to the shore and whipped out some Next Top Model moves that would make Tyra Banks turn and look. I later found out that this (very) young woman had just turned 13 and here I am, almost a decade older, battling to have half the amount of boldness she embodies.

So, to those of you who also struggle to take pride in the things you love, I leave you with this — Nobody is benefiting from your timidness – not yourself and especially not those in your sphere of influence; but so many can be empowered by your voice, if only you have the courage to speak up and act out.

As visitors step into European Café, they are greeted by a warm scent of vanilla and faint sounds of jazz. The café, established in 2014, is owned by Uliana Komodi and Khrystyna Savva, a sister team who are inspired by classic modern style and colorful tastes.

Q – What inspired you and Uliana to open a café?

“Growing up, our mother was always baking delicious cakes for parties. After we moved to Springfield from Ukraine in 2011, Uliana started baking cakes for fun-it was a comforting reminder from the home we knew. She brought a cake to a birthday party and people went on about how much they loved it. Uliana was so encouraged that she made a business out of it and became a self-taught pastry chef. My role around dabbles in a little bit of everything; I consider my job to be more like a hobby because I enjoy being here.”

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][image_with_animation image_url=”6752″ alignment=”center” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][vc_column_text]

Q – What’s the story behind European Café?

“Our pastries and cakes are inspired by classic desserts from regions of Europe. People love to order our Tiramisu–our own little taste of Italy. A lot of our treats originate from classic French desserts but we also have pastries inspired by German and Eastern European cuisine.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

Q – What do you serve at European Café?

“We offer dessert catering for special events, light breakfast options, and coffee beverages. A favorite drink among our regulars is the Crème Bruleé lattee. After frothing the milk, we sprinkle raw sugar on top then torch till caramelized. Also, our patisserie is always stocked with fresh macaroons, fruit tarts, hazelnut mousse cake, and other petit gateaux. Many of our treats are Gluten-free too! We also started offering cooking classes. It’s been great to meet other people in the community who share our love for baking.”

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Q – How is European Café different from other coffee shops?

“We believe food should be beautiful inside and out.

All of our cakes and small bites are made from scratch with only the best ingredients–Belgian chocolate, Italian espresso, and French preserves. A lot of our inspiration comes from famous pastry chefs, such as Antonio Bachour, who are known for making technically complex, beautiful cakes. Baking at this quality is an investment, but we look at our business this way: if we won’t eat it, then we won’t serve it.”
