Personal Style With Kaylinn

If it looks blah, I’m going to feel blah.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]We are living in an era where fashion is completely subjective. Although big brands will always determine the trends, there’s less pressure to conform and more room to use clothing as a form of self-expression. It’s gotten to the point that tasteful fashion can be found anywhere and on anyone; even in the midwest for a college student who may not have the budget to afford the Prada lifestyle.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Kaylin Clotfelter is a student at Missouri State University who dresses to the top. You won’t be able to catch her off guard for a random photoshoot. Believe me, she’s always ready.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]“I’m in between saying I want to be a director and that I am a director. I make videos that are focused around visuals. My main goal is to make everything look pretty. Oh, and I also love modeling and buying clothes.”

Tell us about your style.

Mostly 90s with hints of the better parts of 2000s, wishing there were more 70s pieces. I try to only buy items that are strong statement pieces on their own, so that no matter what I pair it with it will stand out. There’s a lot more to my style than people actually see, because I can’t buy everything I want. So physically I’m a small representation of my actual style (which exists largely in my imagination).

In short, me trying to look richer than I am.

Where do you buy your clothing?

Thrift stores, Depop, Instagram shops, and occasionally some online stores.

How do you know whether a piece of clothing is worth buying?

I don’t! I buy stuff and regret it almost as often as I buy something and love it.  But my rule of thumb for styling day-to-day looks is trying to put together a combination of items that I haven’t worn before. My general goal for getting ready is to look cool enough to be able to do a photoshoot if I needed to. But if I’m running late, I have a few go-to classics.

Is sustainable fashion important to you?

I think I’m sustainable more by accident. It’s not the biggest concern of mine, because in the end if I like it I’ll buy it. I shop mostly vintage because it allows me to get more unique items that are better made at a cheaper price than I could buying new. If I bought stuff from F21 we wouldn’t be having this Q&A. I guess that makes me semi-sustainable?

When did you really find your style?

I don’t think I really have. I know what I like, but I’m still just copying things I see. I don’t have enough money to develop my style to true originality yet.

But some of my fashion icons are @double3exposure @accidentalinfluencer @sisiliapiring and @haleyappell

Compared to your community, how is your style different?

At school, most people wear completely casual clothes on a day to day basis. I try to dress up every day no matter what. Even on the days I wake up too late to put something together I somehow still outdress most everyone else. I’m not sure why.

Have you ever been mocked/ made fun of about your style?

Yes. In high school, if someone jokingly made fun of my outfit it was my way of knowing that it was actually a cool one. I don’t really care if someone makes fun of it unless it’s someone whose opinion I really value. In that case, I consider it constructive criticism.

Mostly if I feel self-conscious about an outfit I remind myself that it would look sweet in photos, so there’s no reason I can’t just wear it for normal life too.

Would you say that your style is a form of self-expression?

Definitely. I like to make sure I look cooler than everyone else, even if that’s not necessarily true. If I’m wearing a totally blah outfit, or really even just a sort of blah outfit, or if I realize the fit was a flop halfway through the day I’m in a bad mood until I can change. I feel like trash if I’m not dressed cool.

What fashion trend do you wish would die and never return?

I can’t really think of anything especially horrid. Everything should have a chance and could potentially be good if styled the right way. (I’m gonna regret saying this next time I see someone wearing flip flops.)[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][image_with_animation image_url=”7030″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][image_with_animation image_url=”7005″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][image_with_animation image_url=”7018″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][image_with_animation image_url=”7004″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][image_with_animation image_url=”7042″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][nectar_cta btn_style=”see-through” heading_tag=”h6″ link_type=”new_tab” alignment=”center” link_text=”View the full photoshoot here.” url=”https://sightsandsouls.co/fashion/a-piece-of-art”%5D%5B/vc_column%5D%5B/vc_row%5D

Tips to Finding Indoor Locations

[vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

Your location isn’t what is keeping you from progressing towards your dream—it’s your mindset.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]I get it. I’m sick of always shooting in a field too and sometimes, renting a studio just isn’t in the budget; but the reality is, I’m not limited by my location or my resources, I’m limited by my perspective.

So, whether you’re trying to escape the cold climate or switch up your style, choosing a fresh space can do wonders to revive your creative eye. Here are some of my favorite alternative indoor locations—[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”2/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

AirBNB

Many of my favorite photoshoots took place in homes and lofts listed on Airbnb. This is a great place to start because the owner has already made the decision to open up their living space to outsiders, now all you have to do is ask. In my experience, I’ve come across people who are willing to share their space free of charge, for trades, or even for 1/2 the price of the rental rate. That’s what the owner did for the space used in these images. If you’re interested in booking a room at Culture Boutique Hotel for yourself, click here.

When it comes to using Airbnb spaces as a photo shoot, my advice is to clearly communicate why you want to use their home, how many people it involves and for how long. Also, if you’re one to travel a lot–spend the extra dollars to get a place you really like. One that’s good for the night’s stay and for a mini shoot. Believe me, you’ll get your money’s worth (that’s what I did for this photoshoot during my stay in Kansas City).[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][image_with_animation image_url=”7194″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”2/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

Unique Establishments

Some of the best indoor locations also double as coffee shops, antique stores, or hotel lobbies. Depending on whether people have photographed here before, I always recommend reaching out to the business owner before taking over their place. Many business owners don’t mind sharing their space, but a couple of things to keep in mind are—

  1. Remember to respect their space and their rules. If the chair says “do not sit”….don’t sit in it for the sake of art.
  2. Show your appreciation by giving back. Don’t be a mooch—buy a cup of Joe or a souvenir to show appreciation that they shared their business with you.
  3. Give credit where credit is due. Once you’ve published your work, make sure to tag the location.

Bare Minimum

For a captivating atmosphere, all you really need are two things: good lighting and decor to fit your vision. It can really be as simple as having a cozy corner with a cool midcentury chair and some plants or a blank wall. This is the cool part about photography: nobody knows what is going on outside the frame. That means that you can do a lot with a small space. Get creative and don’t get overwhelmed with your lack of options. Creativity is a muscle that must be exercised, so take on the challenge with enthusiasm.

A Brief Note About Humanity on Autopilot

A photo series about uncovering the habits that hold us back.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]We are all creature of habits; acting on impulses that slip past our conscious decision-making. These habits go much deeper than whether or not we thrive off a routine; it’s about what we continually seek in life.

It’s when we find our lives in a cycle, what some call habitual behavior. It’s the way we go about finding comfort, feeling cared for, and facing stress. More often than not, they are quick fixes with even quicker letdowns. We resort back to these habits, day after day, knowing that we are capable of more, but lacking the will-power to move forward.

It’s when we live life on autopilot. We find ourselves simply going through the motions and staying within the confines of comfort, but soon enough, we’ll look back on our experiences with a dull ache. It’s often when the concept of “should of” makes its way into our thoughts. And the pressure of not living as we should makes us feel even worse; so to quiet the noise, we go back to that sweet habit with its arms open wide.

And here’s the thing about habits—there’s not one type and one type is not a habit for all. In this series, I chose a cigarette because it’s universally understood to be addictive. Even a life-long smoker will admit that. But what about the habits that are disguised as admirable things. Kind of like the lover that you know, deep down, isn’t good for your soul but is just a quick fix to feel connected–couldn’t they too be a habit that needs to be let go of?

Or maybe, it’s a mantra that overran its course. “Only you can look out for you.” It’s a self-empowering thought after a season of co-dependence, but what about after you’ve regained a sense of fulfillment but are now too fearful to let others in. Wouldn’t that too be a habit that should retire?

Stripped down to its basics, I believe a habit to be anything that involves rationalizing its presence in my life. When I first reflected on this, I became less concerned with removing the obvious habits and more intentional about pulling up the root of the action. Habits are often masked as fear, envy, shame, and doubt. More often than not, habits are connected to situations that we never truly worked through. It was an “aha” moment, to say the least, an ugly realization, but nevertheless, most impactful.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][image_with_animation image_url=”7533″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

So, I leave you with this:

What is it who’s arms you continually lay in?

Is it a person or a perspective?

A coping mechanism or self-medication?

Whatever it is—I welcome you to, once and for all, walk away from that habit with me and find clarity.

Cheers,[/vc_column_text][image_with_animation image_url=”7566″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”50%” margin_top=”-15″ margin_left=”20″][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The Year I Actually Wrote Down Goals

In the past when the new year came around, my resolutions mostly consisted of “drinking more water” and “getting in shape”–whatever that means. And would you know it that by the next year, I recycled my resolutions into that new year, again. I chose resolutions based off of what I felt obligated to change instead of what I really needed to do for myself. Which brings me to my whole point: self-reflection and goal making is a little intimidating for me.
My shift in perspective happened like most revelations; I was having a conversation with a dear friend of mine who is the goal-setting queen, and this woman dreams big. BIG. I’m inspired by her big picture thinking and it made me realize this underlying fear: if I write a goal down then I am admitting to a dream….that might not happen. 2018 was the year I had to hit backspace on that last clause. And so, I wrote down some 2018 goals for myself, such as:
  1. Explore your style; strengthen your voice
  2. Partner with more creatives (HMUA, videographers, models, boutique owners, etc.)
  3. Do something outside your comfort zone in photography
  4. Get published by a magazine
  5. Respect your worth and stop underquoting yourself

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”2/5″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][image_with_animation image_url=”6161″ alignment=”center” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1548581611626{padding-top: 10px !important;}”]

Walking Into The New Year

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

I’d be lying if I didn’t admit the extensive pressure I felt in April when my list seemed unaccomplished and I continued to fall into bad habits like jealousy and taking on underpaying gigs. But as I worked through my expectations and short-fallings, I found my path. Most importantly, I learned to narrow my focus. I quit looking towards others and what they were accomplishing, and I reverted back to that list and just kept refining myself and my brand.
And so I learned that although there is a time for everything, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t prepare ourselves for these achievements. The goals we leave unchecked by the end of the year are not a reflection of our worth or lack of work ethic–it just means it hasn’t come to fruition, yet.
There is a healthy balance to goal setting.
A year can do a lot in an artist’s life, and most of the time, it’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work just to make that check mark signify “done.” So, for those of you who worked tirelessly to make 2018 productive–I celebrate with you and I hope you are thankful for every ounce of perseverance that it took for you to get there and every person who helped you along the way.
And for those of you who feel like your expectations for 2018 fell short–just know that things are still in the works and this whole New Year phenomena does not have to dictate the benchmarks for your growth.
So, let us all welcome 2019 with a hopeful heart and encouraged mindset to keep striving towards our personal and professional growth while never dismissing the perfect and often-confusing timing of the Universe.
Cheers,
Paige

At some point we all feel like aliens in the place we once called home.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=”.vc_custom_1548572994406{margin-right: 20px !important;margin-left: 20px !important;}”]The place that is so instilled in us that we know it by each of our senses. Even without sight, we know it by the smells and every crevice and hiding spot. Take away our hearing and still, we taste the winds that once carried us.

So, when did it all turn to ruins. How can the soil where our seeds were sewn turn barren. Where there was so much growth, now only resides tender reminders of what used to be and what never was.

We remember flourishing forests, yet now as our eyes are opened, there are only toxic sands. Void of life. Empty of nutrients.

Was it negligence? Minutes turned years of laxity? I retrace the steps I once walked in, and still I see my imprints engrained in the Sandhills, without interruption. Finding Balance As An Artist

[vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][image_with_animation image_url=”7132″ alignment=”center” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

So, here’s one of the hardest things to accept as an artist: my most popular work is not my most profitable work, and my most treasured work is not my most popular work.

It’s hard to balance being an artist and making a living as an artist. Imposter syndrome aside, even with confidence, sometimes the ideal clients just aren’t to be found. So, where’s all this pressure coming from? It’s the need to be valued and thrive in our work. To do this, we feel we must obtain three things—

1. Fulfillment: expressing ourselves wholeheartedly in our craft

2. Worth: being valued in our niche community

3. Security: making a profitable living through our craft to further our work.

Like many of you, I first dipped my toe in photography because I was looking for a safe place to express myself. I found a lot of fulfillment there and so began the dreams of making this hobby into a career. Since then, I’ve been on a rollercoaster journey of discovering my style, overcoming hardships, and learning the business of it all.

So, what now? How did I find balance?

To be real. I don’t have a recipe for success, but I do have some easy to follow tips if you’re willing to take the time and not scoff at a simple solution.

First. Figure out where the balance is off.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]*Draw a circle and divide it into three sections labeled “fulfillment”, “worth”, and “security”. Reflect and make a dot in each section according to how you feel in that category. Connect the dots. You might notice that your shape looks like a little lopsided—that’s okay. That’s where your growth is.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]If you’ve been booking clients like crazy, make it a priority to do a personal project. What’s been on your mind lately? What inspires you in this season of life? Grab a pen and start brainstorming![/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Maybe you are satisfied with your work in general, but you feel unappreciated. Take time to write out 5 things you excel at and 3 things you want to work on. Then, hop online and find new artists within your niche and give them a nice compliment. Admiration is contagious—especially when it’s expressed with an intentional heart.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Maybe you are satisfied with your work in general, but you feel unappreciated. Do not get overwhelmed. It’s a day-by-day process of finding your entrepreneurial flow. Seek outside resources like youtube or self-made entrepreneurs like Jenna Kutcher (Goal Digger). I say this a lot, but life ebb-and-flows and the best thing we can do for ourselves as human beings and artists is constantly check-in with ourselves~

Cheers.

***I originally came across this method from Julia Cameron’s book The Artist’s Way which uses it as a way to find balance in life in general.

A Foggy Day At Cannon Beach

It was my first time being on the west coast and even as I write this, I am still in awe over the mountainous backdrops and lush scenery.

While in Oregon, I visit my dear friends who lived in Portland. During my stay, they were so kind as to show me around their home state, and visiting Cannon Beach was by far my favorite. We woke up early one morning and by the time we made it, a thick fog was covering the beach. We couldn’t help but find how ironic it was; we drove all this way to see the infamous Haystack Rock and here we were and we couldn’t even see 10 feet in front of us.

We bought some time at Insomnia Coffee Co which I highly recommend, but even after our pit-stop, the fog seemed even thicker. Honestly, I didn’t mind it at all. I found the entire scene captivating. There’s something about fog that creates an atmosphere of nostalgia and curiosity. Plus, it eventually began to thin out and we could see the tip of the haystack rock.

“Look! One-eyed Willies treasure!”

(Do I need to reference the Goonies? )

All in all, it was a day well spent. Plus, I also managed to snag some photographs of my dear friends, Noah and Kim.

Self vs. Ego

We all have stories to tell.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”2/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

Some of us share by stringing words together, some craft the story with a stroke of a brush. While I love telling a good story, sometimes searching for the words feels limiting. It’s one of the many reasons why I’m drawn to visual forms of storytelling and why I resonate with Fred R. Barnard’s infamous quote, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” I’ve found that the words are so plentiful because they aren’t just the words in my vocabulary but in the interpretations from others.

Since starting this form of storytelling, editorial photography has become my favorite style. It’s a challenge to visually craft a story that others will find meaning in as well—but all challenges reap the best results.

This particular image is part of a series that I call “Selves.” Loosely based off Sigmund Freud’s model of the psyche, I wanted this image to show the interactions that we have with ourselves.

Our true self vs. our ego.

With the patience of a child, the ego is that little voice in our heads that recognizes needs and strives ruthlessly to satisfy them.

Where there is a need to be loved, there is also a fear of abandonment; the ego attempts to protect us from humiliation and pain. Her vision is to portray an individual who is grounded in her sense of self.

She’s the first to notice motives in others, full of reasoning and relentless to a cause.

Sometimes our ego saves us from repeating mistakes and sometimes it keeps us from being vulnerable with others. It is both necessary and destructive.

Maybe in a world without deceit, shame and manipulation, there would be no need for an ego, but as author Debbie Ford points out–we must keep fighting to see the humanity in everybody.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

To live in the light of a new day and an unimaginable and unpredictable future, you must become fully present to a deeper truth – not a truth from your head, but a truth from your heart; not a truth from your ego, but a truth from the highest source.

-Debbie Ford

Honoring self-expression looks different for everyone. Sometimes it means appreciating work without critique, while other times it means just allowing yourself to create freely.

It’s about continually answering the call upon your inner artist’s heart. The ebb and flow of rediscovering your voice and not being afraid to share it with the world. It’s about not getting caught up in calling yourself just a photographer or just a business owner. It’s about continually expanding your borders when you feel comfortable–because that’s where we make work with a purpose. We are all dynamic individuals and that means that sometimes our life just can’t—wait, no, it SHOULDN’T be cohesive. Yikes. In the age of social media where a cohesive feed and, therefore, brand is a major selling point, the pressure to stick to one craft is heavy.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][image_with_animation image_url=”6739″ alignment=”center” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][image_with_animation image_url=”6745″ alignment=”center” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][image_with_animation image_url=”6746″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][image_with_animation image_url=”6748″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]And this was exactly the conversation Kendra and I had during our session. Kendra is a business owner, loving wife, go-happy photographer, painter and many, many things. Anyone who knows Kendra personally or who has had the pleasure of working with her knows that she radiates life and joy without condition. She’s truly a gem.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”2/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

But like any artist, Kendra is constantly knocking down her own artist’s walls by never settling for unattainable perfection, but always striving towards authenticity. It was out of this that Lilac and Paperie was born.

“Lilac Paperie has been a dream of mine for a long time and I am so grateful to be sharing it with you! It goes much deeper than just some art on a page for me though, it is a way for me to share my heart, struggles, joys, pains, and triumphs with you. I have come to realize over the past few years that life is short, we don’t always get what we want, but God is good and He is calling us to use the passions He has given us for a higher purpose. Whatever that may be, I am excited to begin right here.”

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Honoring her artistic curiosity is what makes this creativepreneur such an inspiration. Her work truly speaks for itself and she’s nowhere near the end of her journey,[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][image_with_animation image_url=”6742″ alignment=”center” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

“My dream is to one day have a brick and mortar shop where I can meet you face to face and we can talk dreams together. You could walk in to smell the sweet aroma of fresh cut lilacs, listen to soothing music and I would offer you a cup of coffee or tea while you browse.”
