As children, we were all asked the question of what we aspire to be when we are older. And like reality unfolds, our desires to become an astronaut or the next president don’t always pan out. But for Amanda DeVenuta, her dreams of making dance a career came to fruition but not without tedious practice.

At the age of 3, Amanda started dancing. By the time she was 8 years old, she knew it was what she wanted to do for the rest of her life.

“As a ballerina, some pivotal moments were specific moments on stage. While I danced with the National Ballet of Canada, I had the opportunity to dance with my dream partner and dear friend. We teared up on stage while dancing together. It is forever special to me. A true moment that helped me grow as an artist.”

Since then, Amanda has joined many dance companies with the Kansas City Ballet being the most recent. She has performed roles in Swan Lake, Rite of Spring, Diving Into The Lilacs, The Three Musketeers, Alice (in wonderland), Giselle, Wunderland, The Four Temperaments, Interplay, Theme and Variations, Diamonds, The Uneven, Play, and Romeo & Juliet.

“While dancing the lead in Diving Into The Lilacs, I had the most ethereal, liberating moment for me. That performance was sought out as one of Dance Magazine’s Top 25 dancers to watch in 2017 in the world.”

“As a dancer, I feel as though I am still trying to find that balance between work and creating expression. Experiencing the beauty of life so real emotions can translate through me on stage is something I treasure deeply. I love writing, poetry, having an exotic coffee, walking around the museum, shopping and trying new cuisine. There can be inspiration everywhere if you just look.”

When I design I strive for beauty and creating a piece that flatters the body. I get a lot of my inspirations from old runway pieces and classic vintage styles. Taking something old and making it new again inspires me the most. I’m able to wear my creations and share them with the world.

Martha Maruna is one of those people who’s timeless beauty and sincerity captures you. She was raised in a small town in Illinois and moved to Kansas City, Missouri to pursue her many passions, some being fashion and floristry.

Martha now juggles her time between repurposing vintage clothing, working at a floral shop, modeling, drinking matcha tea and swooning over her icon, Marilyn Monroe. But among all her enthusiasms, Martha’s interest in styling started at a young age:

“As a young child my mother taught me embroidery by writing quotes, sayings and simple flowers on cloth and having me trace over them. As I got older she taught me hand stitching and then sewing with a machine. My mother also made most of our clothes when when we were young and thankfully it was a skill she had taught me. Sewing is one of the many skills I’m blessed to have been raised doing as it shaped my life and interests.”

Almost all of my clothes are thrifted or vintage. I rarely shop anything new anymore as it bores me to know people all over the world can be wearing the exact same clothes as me – what’s stylish about that?

“When I shop I look for timeless pieces that inspire me. Elegant blouses, oversized sleeves, chunky sweaters, oversized suit jackets, silk dresses and high waisted pants are my staple purchases. The pieces I’ve been looking for lately are silk slip dresses and an oversized leather suit jacket. All things leather this fall.”

The fashion industry is one of the largest in the world and is also now one of the biggest polluters in the world, the first being oil. The quality of most fast fashion fabrics is very poor – choosing quality over quantity is a must. I’m driven by the passion of taking my own creations and having them be a physical reality. I love being able to wear my designs and know they’re something I truly love. Instead of trying to find unique styles that someone else is creating I just make what I’m looking for.

Martha recently started selling her own designs. Her style is very classic and simple; vintage with a modern touch. If I could sum up her designs in one way it would be “timeless pieces that one can wear over and over and style multiple ways.”

It’s a place where artists are lining the streets and it’s been this way since the early 1900s. It’s here you will find the local painters, sketch artists, musicians and even some characteristics—you know, for the tourists. One thing is for certain, there is no lack of talent among this community. Each person has their own technique, perspective and color palette. While looking, I found it hard to even choose a painting if I were able to take one home.

This particular man was walking around asking people if he could draw them. When he sensed someone’s hesitation, he would assure them that if they didn’t like it then they need not to pay. I’m not sure what it was about him, but I wondered about his journey as an artist. He looked the part and had this aura of melancholy mixed with mystery. I wonder if this is what he always wanted to do or if it was the means to afford his true passion. I didn’t get the chance to ask him his name or even see any of his work.

After some time, I saw him again later in the afternoon, and he just sat off to the side, watching the tourists pass by while holding his blank canvas smoking a cigarette.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

slow steps of growth followed by louder criticisms of doubt.

 

It’s things like these that breed impactful art, because art is not to showcase the extravagent, unattainable or unimaginable;

There is a lot of noise that makes us want to be different:

our bodies thinner,

pockets fuller,

love life richer.

It’s this wishful thinking that capsizes our appreciation for here and now and with whom. So, as bold as it may be, I would ask that if in some way the art you chose to practice only heightens yourself, stop and rethink:

who are you creating for?

and what are you saying?

Behind every piece of jewelry is a process and for Mulxiply, it looks much different than your average jewlerer.

A collection evolves over conversations about what they like, what they see trending in the marketplace and what can actually be made in Nepal. The company strives to use material native to Nepal but since some quality hardware is hard to find, these parts are either shipped or hand-carried to Nepal. Their hope is that at some point, every element of their pieces will be made in Nepal.

After 2-4 months of refining the design, a sample collection is made within 2-4 months. The owners behind Mulxiply spend 4-8 weeks each year in Nepal to spend time with the artisans during this development process.

“Our favorite part of this venture is ultimately meeting the artisans, learning about their lives and working alongside them. It’s so very different from our daily lives, it’s both humbling and inspiring to hear about what they must overcome on a daily basis. They know so much more about how things can be done than we do. Being knee-deep in their creative process is a joy that there are really no words for.”

It came down to seeking authenticity. A life without joy is no life at all but in pursuit of this happiness, we have created a culture that looks the part but rarely lives it out.

Put it in this perspective:

If we did a survey and asked people how they were actually feeling in a particular photograph, how many would actually list “happiness.”

It begs the question: what’s the value in a smile?

When it comes to life, I consider myself to be a pretty happy person. I naturally smile a lot because I am genuinely content with the day is going. But I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that I have used a smile once or twice to cover up what is really going on.  Over the past year, I’ve been learning what it means to live authentically; meaning that I make space for my own feelings. The good, the bad and the ugly. I haven’t always given myself permission to feel anger, express worry or show sadness. Photography opened that door for me to express these less-than-desired emotions.

This decision also came as I learned more about my husband’s culture. For those of you who don’t know me, I’ve been married for 5 years. My husband, Francois, is French. When we first started dating, I noticed that Francois rarely smiled in pictures with a big cheesy grin. I would always ask him—”why can’t you show those pearly whites, aren’t you happy?” He would respond that it wasn’t because he wasn’t happy, he just didn’t feel the need to overexaggerate his happiness. Huh. It really opened my eyes to a worldview wherein one instant, we can throw a smile on to convince people we are doing just fine. Such as:

Families arguing over dinner until someone pulls out their phone and says, “get in the picture.” The annoyance is set aside for a split second as everyone huddles together for a good ‘ol family picture.

A young woman battling depression but can muster up the strength to smile for a selfie that she posts in search of affirmation.

I often wonder how we can seek pure joy when we are too busy mimicking it. Where is the line drawn between social custom and self-denial? If we are so quick to convince everyone else that we are happy, how is anyone supposed to know how we are doing, really? At least not in the way that I intend. I want my work to tell people that it’s okay to not be okay, just as long as you don’t stay here. Give weight to how you are feeling and take the steps to grow.

We are complex beings with an array of emotions. This is something I like to explore.

What is sadness without tears shed?

Anger without tightened fists?

Happiness without a smile?

It’s emotions like boredom, peace, and wonder that I gravitate towards in my work. I did not give myself this rule to avoid smiles or expressions of happiness; I only desire for it to be genuine. I want to capture who a person is at that moment. So, if a smile is what I am after, how can I evoke it out of my subject?

The answer is simple: get to know the person. What makes them happy? What makes them laugh? All of my favorite cheesy photos were taken in a moment where I either embarrassed myself and made them laugh or the fewer times when someone actually found my joke funny. Sustainable Style: clothing and accessories that are made with the “whole” in mind. The entire process of creating a garment, from growing the textile to stitching it together, is mindful of the people, planet, and community.

We are living in a time where we can find things fast and cheap. In fact, the average person buys 60% more items of clothing yet only keeps them for about half as long compared to 15 years ago (Greenpeace 2017). Part of this is due to the quick turnover of style-trends. Whereas there used to be four main seasons, the industry now operates on a 52 micro-season cycle. This “out with the old and in with the new” mentality is not only desensitizing our consumer habits but also putting pressure on the workers who make the clothing. It’s a life of harsh living conditions and low wages; over 50% of workers within the fashion industry are not paid the minimum wage in countries like India and the Philippines. (Global Fashion Agenda 2017)

Yves Saint Laurent famously said “Fashion fades, style is eternal.” Whereas fashion is an art that is notoriously difficult to keep up with because trends change seasonally, style is impacted by much longer-lasting factors. Style is affected by religion, politics, culture and subculture, weather, body type, profession, upbringing, etc. (Mari Andrew , Paste Magazine)

Style makes space for individualism and removes conformity and gladly, comparison with it. One’s style compliments the body and encourages self-acceptance. It is a form of expression. With sustainable style, one realizes that this expression is also a reflection of power as consumers.

So, what does investing in sustainable style look like?

  1. Buying less and choosing well.

Being sustainable is mostly about being intentional with what we buy. It doesn’t mean you need to become a minimalist, it just means you need to be mindful.

   2. Choosing second-hand clothing.

Fashion trends repeat themselves throughout the decades. So, instead of buying the new, and most likely, less quality version of that 1990s attire, seek out the originals in thrift stores or depop shops.

   3. Repairing and repurposing old clothing.

When we choose well, our garments last longer. If it comes to the point where that sweater is snagged or the jeans become too short. Stich the imperfection or cut the jeans into shorts. Get creative.

     4. Supporting brands that incorporate sustainability.

And who are these brands? Most likely, if a brand is sustainable in some way, they will talk about it. Companies like Good On You are making it easier to know a brand’s impact by doing the research for you; search a favorite brand of yours and check out their rating based on the impact on labor, the environment, and animals.
