Dancing is creating a sculpture that is visible only for a moment.

As children, we were all asked the question of what we aspire to be when we are older. And like reality unfolds, our desires to become an astronaut or the next president don’t always pan out. But for Amanda DeVenuta, her dreams of making dance a career came to fruition but not without tedious practice.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

At the age of 3, Amanda started dancing. By the time she was 8 years old, she knew it was what she wanted to do for the rest of her life.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

“As a ballerina, some pivotal moments were specific moments on stage. While I danced with the National Ballet of Canada, I had the opportunity to dance with my dream partner and dear friend. We teared up on stage while dancing together. It is forever special to me. A true moment that helped me grow as an artist.”

Since then, Amanda has joined many dance companies with the Kansas City Ballet being the most recent. She has performed roles in Swan Lake, Rite of Spring, Diving Into The Lilacs, The Three Musketeers, Alice (in wonderland), Giselle, Wunderland, The Four Temperaments, Interplay, Theme and Variations, Diamonds, The Uneven, Play, and Romeo & Juliet.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

“While dancing the lead in Diving Into The Lilacs, I had the most ethereal, liberating moment for me. That performance was sought out as one of Dance Magazine’s Top 25 dancers to watch in 2017 in the world.”

“As a dancer, I feel as though I am still trying to find that balance between work and creating expression. Experiencing the beauty of life so real emotions can translate through me on stage is something I treasure deeply. I love writing, poetry, having an exotic coffee, walking around the museum, shopping and trying new cuisine. There can be inspiration everywhere if you just look.”

Repurposed fashion with Martha Eve

When I design I strive for beauty and creating a piece that flatters the body. I get a lot of my inspirations from old runway pieces and classic vintage styles. Taking something old and making it new again inspires me the most. I’m able to wear my creations and share them with the world.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]- Martha Maruna[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

Martha Maruna is one of those people who’s timeless beauty and sincerity captures you. She was raised in a small town in Illinois and moved to Kansas City, Missouri to pursue her many passions, some being fashion and floristry.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Martha now juggles her time between repurposing vintage clothing, working at a floral shop, modeling, drinking matcha tea and swooning over her icon, Marilyn Monroe. But among all her enthusiasms, Martha’s interest in styling started at a young age:

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

“As a young child my mother taught me embroidery by writing quotes, sayings and simple flowers on cloth and having me trace over them. As I got older she taught me hand stitching and then sewing with a machine. My mother also made most of our clothes when when we were young and thankfully it was a skill she had taught me. Sewing is one of the many skills I’m blessed to have been raised doing as it shaped my life and interests.”

Almost all of my clothes are thrifted or vintage. I rarely shop anything new anymore as it bores me to know people all over the world can be wearing the exact same clothes as me – what’s stylish about that?

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

“When I shop I look for timeless pieces that inspire me. Elegant blouses, oversized sleeves, chunky sweaters, oversized suit jackets, silk dresses and high waisted pants are my staple purchases. The pieces I’ve been looking for lately are silk slip dresses and an oversized leather suit jacket. All things leather this fall.”

While the cost of making your own clothes is often much less than buying in store, it is also more sustainable just as thrifting and repurposing.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

“Also the impact new clothing has on our environment drives my passion.

The fashion industry is one of the largest in the world and is also now one of the biggest polluters in the world, the first being oil. The quality of most fast fashion fabrics is very poor – choosing quality over quantity is a must. The term “fast fashion” refers to companies quickly producing cheap pieces of clothing that follow the latest trends. Nothing is made to last and produces mass amount of waste. It’s important to me that I purchase from small companies or second hand. It’s important to repurpose and recycle your old clothing. I encourage everyone to educate themselves on the significant impact fast fashion has on our world.”

I’m driven by the passion of taking my own creations and having them be a physical reality. I love being able to wear my designs and know they’re something I truly love. Instead of trying to find unique styles that someone else is creating I just make what I’m looking for.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Martha recently started selling her own designs. Her style is very classic and simple; vintage with a modern touch. If I could sum up her designs in one way it would be “timeless pieces that one can wear over and over and style multiple ways.”

One person’s choice to make a difference inspires another; it’s the multiply effect.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Pronounced “multiply” – this is a company whose collection is as beautiful as its impact.

The collection is designed in Portland, Maine and then forged by fair-wage artisans using techniques native to Nepal. Each piece is uniquely made by hand and is equally inspired by modern shapes as it is by age-old techniques.

The heart behind mulxiply is that one person’s choice to make a difference inspires another; it’s the multiply effect. One purchase supports a team of artisans in Nepal which then contributes to the family, and soon enough, it strengthens an entire community.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][image_with_animation image_url=”7976″ alignment=”center” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%” img_link=”https://sightsandsouls.co/commercial/mulxiply”%5D%5B/vc_column%5D%5B/vc_row%5D%5Bvc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][image_with_animation image_url=”7927″ alignment=”center” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%” img_link=”https://sightsandsouls.co/commercial/mulxiply”%5D%5B/vc_column%5D%5Bvc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][image_with_animation image_url=”7935″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%” img_link=”https://sightsandsouls.co/commercial/mulxiply”%5D%5B/vc_column%5D%5Bvc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][image_with_animation image_url=”7926″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%” img_link=”https://sightsandsouls.co/commercial/mulxiply”%5D%5B/vc_column%5D%5B/vc_row%5D%5Bvc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

“Beauty is intrinsic to this country, not only in its proximity to the expansive Himalayas, but with its heritage of woven textiles, metalwork and wood-carving. While it is heart-breaking to see the fall-out corruption has reaped on this country, it is also in places like Nepal where hope and possibility are far-reaching.”

While it is a country full of mountainous backdrops and hospital, hard-working people, it is also a place where half of its citizens are living below the poverty line. Among these Nepalis, the average pay is $1.25 per day.

Amidst a harsh political climate, civil rights issues and recurring natural disasters, Nepal is also experiencing a spike of urbanization that is causing poverty to rise and job availability to drop. As a result, there is a large movement of Nepali men leaving the country for elsewhere.

“While it may provide a salary, this is a scheme that takes men away from their families for months at a time, hijacks their passports and convinces them that their meager salary is worth the trade. Just like the fast-fashion garment industry, wealthy opportunists are building fake empires on the bones of the poor. With this understanding, MULXIPLY has broadened its mission to providing dignified work for men and women alike. A successful society cannot be built without equal opportunity and respect for both.”

Behind every piece of jewelry is a process and for Mulxiply, it looks much different than your average jewlerer.

A collection evolves over conversations about what they like, what they see trending in the marketplace and what can actually be made in Nepal. The company strives to use material native to Nepal but since some quality hardware is hard to find, these parts are either shipped or hand-carried to Nepal. Their hope is that at some point, every element of their pieces will be made in Nepal.

After 2-4 months of refining the design, a sample collection is made within 2-4 months. The owners behind Mulxiply spend 4-8 weeks each year in Nepal to spend time with the artisans during this development process.

“Our favorite part of this venture is ultimately meeting the artisans, learning about their lives and working alongside them. It’s so very different from our daily lives, it’s both humbling and inspiring to hear about what they must overcome on a daily basis. They know so much more about how things can be done than we do. Being knee-deep in their creative process is a joy that there are really no words for.”

And with that, I leave you with something Tanja, one of the founders, shared back in 2016:

“…the revolution has already started. And it’s based on something really unlikely.

Beauty.

Let me explain. Societies thrive when people feel secure. People feel secure when their basic needs are met and are provided (or create) opportunities that are dignified, gainful, and life-giving. Opportunities as such are scarce in Nepal. Less than half the population are educated. Those with higher education, often leave the country. Understandably, few return. But, those that have stayed in-country or have returned and are investing in grassroots, long-term ideas, are quietly rebuilding Nepal from the inside out—with creativity, diligence and determination. While none of them are politicians, they are the makers of change. They are the leaders of the quiet revolution. And their energy is intense and contagious.

How is beauty revolutionary? Because beauty is inspirational, it has staying power. What motivates people to come to Nepal? Besides the Himalayas, tourists come to see the ancient temples, palaces and monasteries built exquisitely by artisans that are masters of their craft. Without artists, there is no art, no heritage sites, no tourist attractions. Simply put, when beauty is tangibly translated into art, design and architecture it becomes a quantifiable business that creates jobs. Jobs that employ artisans. Jobs that are contributing to stabilizing the local and global economy. It’s slow capitalism in action. And it’s working.”

If it looks blah, I’m going to feel blah.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]We are living in an era where fashion is completely subjective. Although big brands will always determine the trends, there’s less pressure to conform and more room to use clothing as a form of self-expression. It’s gotten to the point that tasteful fashion can be found anywhere and on anyone; even in the midwest for a college student who may not have the budget to afford the Prada lifestyle.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Kaylin Clotfelter is a student at Missouri State University who dresses to the top. You won’t be able to catch her off guard for a random photoshoot. Believe me, she’s always ready.[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]“I’m in between saying I want to be a director and that I am a director. I make videos that are focused around visuals. My main goal is to make everything look pretty. Oh, and I also love modeling and buying clothes.”

Tell us about your style.

Mostly 90s with hints of the better parts of 2000s, wishing there were more 70s pieces. I try to only buy items that are strong statement pieces on their own, so that no matter what I pair it with it will stand out. There’s a lot more to my style than people actually see, because I can’t buy everything I want. So physically I’m a small representation of my actual style (which exists largely in my imagination).

In short, me trying to look richer than I am.

Where do you buy your clothing?

Thrift stores, Depop, Instagram shops, and occasionally some online stores.

How do you know whether a piece of clothing is worth buying?

I don’t! I buy stuff and regret it almost as often as I buy something and love it.  But my rule of thumb for styling day-to-day looks is trying to put together a combination of items that I haven’t worn before. My general goal for getting ready is to look cool enough to be able to do a photoshoot if I needed to. But if I’m running late, I have a few go-to classics.

Is sustainable fashion important to you?

I think I’m sustainable more by accident. It’s not the biggest concern of mine, because in the end if I like it I’ll buy it. I shop mostly vintage because it allows me to get more unique items that are better made at a cheaper price than I could buying new. If I bought stuff from F21 we wouldn’t be having this Q&A. I guess that makes me semi-sustainable?

When did you really find your style?

I don’t think I really have. I know what I like, but I’m still just copying things I see. I don’t have enough money to develop my style to true originality yet.

But some of my fashion icons are @double3exposure @accidentalinfluencer @sisiliapiring and @haleyappell

Compared to your community, how is your style different?

At school, most people wear completely casual clothes on a day to day basis. I try to dress up every day no matter what. Even on the days I wake up too late to put something together I somehow still outdress most everyone else. I’m not sure why.

Have you ever been mocked/ made fun of about your style?

Yes. In high school, if someone jokingly made fun of my outfit it was my way of knowing that it was actually a cool one. I don’t really care if someone makes fun of it unless it’s someone whose opinion I really value. In that case, I consider it constructive criticism.

Mostly if I feel self-conscious about an outfit I remind myself that it would look sweet in photos, so there’s no reason I can’t just wear it for normal life too.

Would you say that your style is a form of self-expression?

Definitely. I like to make sure I look cooler than everyone else, even if that’s not necessarily true. If I’m wearing a totally blah outfit, or really even just a sort of blah outfit, or if I realize the fit was a flop halfway through the day I’m in a bad mood until I can change. I feel like trash if I’m not dressed cool.

What fashion trend do you wish would die and never return?

I can’t really think of anything especially horrid. Everything should have a chance and could potentially be good if styled the right way. (I’m gonna regret saying this next time I see someone wearing flip flops.)[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][image_with_animation image_url=”7030″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][image_with_animation image_url=”7005″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][image_with_animation image_url=”7018″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][image_with_animation image_url=”7004″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][image_with_animation image_url=”7042″ alignment=”” animation=”Fade In” border_radius=”none” box_shadow=”none” max_width=”100%”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][nectar_cta btn_style=”see-through” heading_tag=”h6″ link_type=”new_tab” alignment=”center” link_text=”View the full photoshoot here.” url=”https://sightsandsouls.co/fashion/a-piece-of-art”%5D%5B/vc_column%5D%5B/vc_row%5D

Honoring self-expression looks different for everyone. Sometimes it means appreciating work without critique, while other times it means just allowing yourself to create freely.

It’s about continually answering the call upon your inner artist’s heart. The ebb and flow of rediscovering your voice and not being afraid to share it with the world. It’s about not getting caught up in calling yourself just a photographer or just a business owner. It’s about continually expanding your borders when you feel comfortable–because that’s where we make work with a purpose. We are all dynamic individuals and that means that sometimes our life just can’t—wait, no, it SHOULDN’T be cohesive. Yikes. She’s truly a gem.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”2/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

But like any artist, Kendra is constantly knocking down her own artist’s walls by never settling for unattainable perfection, but always striving towards authenticity. It was out of this that Lilac and Paperie was born.

“Lilac Paperie has been a dream of mine for a long time and I am so grateful to be sharing it with you! It goes much deeper than just some art on a page for me though, it is a way for me to share my heart, struggles, joys, pains, and triumphs with you. I have come to realize over the past few years that life is short, we don’t always get what we want, but God is good and He is calling us to use the passions He has given us for a higher purpose. Whatever that may be, I am excited to begin right here.”

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Honoring her artistic curiosity is what makes this creativepreneur such an inspiration. “My dream is to one day have a brick and mortar shop where I can meet you face to face and we can talk dreams together. You could walk in to smell the sweet aroma of fresh cut lilacs, listen to soothing music and I would offer you a cup of coffee or tea while you browse.”

As visitors step into European Café, they are greeted by a warm scent of vanilla and faint sounds of jazz. The café, established in 2014, is owned by Uliana Komodi and Khrystyna Savva, a sister team who are inspired by classic modern style and colorful tastes.

Q – What inspired you and Uliana to open a café?

“Growing up, our mother was always baking delicious cakes for parties. After we moved to Springfield from Ukraine in 2011, Uliana started baking cakes for fun-it was a comforting reminder from the home we knew. She brought a cake to a birthday party and people went on about how much they loved it. Uliana was so encouraged that she made a business out of it and became a self-taught pastry chef. My role around dabbles in a little bit of everything; I consider my job to be more like a hobby because I enjoy being here.”

Q – What’s the story behind European Café?

“Our pastries and cakes are inspired by classic desserts from regions of Europe. People love to order our Tiramisu–our own little taste of Italy. A lot of our treats originate from classic French desserts but we also have pastries inspired by German and Eastern European cuisine.”[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row type=”in_container” full_screen_row_position=”middle” scene_position=”center” text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” overlay_strength=”0.3″ shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column column_padding=”no-extra-padding” column_padding_position=”all” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_link_target=”_self” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” width=”1/2″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” bg_image_animation=”none”][vc_column_text]

Q – What do you serve at European Café?

“We offer dessert catering for special events, light breakfast options, and coffee beverages. A favorite drink among our regulars is the Crème Bruleé lattee. After frothing the milk, we sprinkle raw sugar on top then torch till caramelized. Also, our patisserie is always stocked with fresh macaroons, fruit tarts, hazelnut mousse cake, and other petit gateaux. Many of our treats are Gluten-free too! We also started offering cooking classes. It’s been great to meet other people in the community who share our love for baking.”

Q – How is European Café different from other coffee shops?

“We believe food should be beautiful inside and out.

All of our cakes and small bites are made from scratch with only the best ingredients–Belgian chocolate, Italian espresso, and French preserves. A lot of our inspiration comes from famous pastry chefs, such as Antonio Bachour, who are known for making technically complex, beautiful cakes. Baking at this quality is an investment, but we look at our business this way: if we won’t eat it, then we won’t serve it.”
